What's all this then?
WebSafe Crackerz is a spoof world. You'll find genuine safety information throughout all the sites, but we've surrounded it with a fictional story about gladhanders, liars, stalkers, bullies, security bouncers, detectives, fake spam and mobile phone companies and a big boss (the Baron), who runs the whole show. Why tell a story? Easy, because teenagers have told us that learning about online safety is boring.
We asked some teenagers how we could make people your age aware of the main issues. They told us this: serve the info straight-up, don't patronise us and make sure that there are interactive pieces, games and PRIZES!
We launched the first version in May 2004 and then went back and asked more questions. Here's what we were told this time: make it less immature, less like learning, have less of the "u r" nonsense and please cut out those pop ups... oh, and we want more games and prizes!
The result is Websafe Crackerz 2, a range of micro-sites offering strategies to help you deal with all kinds of tech situations. This time we've made it accessible, so people who use speech readers and other enabling technology can play the game, too. (Note from editor: right now there are two sections which are fully accessible, but the entire site will be accessible by the beginning of July).
Whether it's an everyday issue such as Spam, or less common occurrences like cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying or sexual harassment, we've aimed to reveal some of the key motivations of people who misuse the Internet for their own personal or commercial ends.
We hope that by interacting with this site you'll be able to make informed decisions about using the Internet and engaging with people online. We've tried not to fob you off with simplistic answers and a boring list of do's and don'ts, which is why we asked teenagers to help. We've also consulted with children's charities, support organizations and experts in the field, and you can find links to their sites throughout ours.
